Join Wendy and Shakti for a participatory and creative ceremony on this shortest day of the year. Remember with us how to celebrate without spending. Make an offering of a reading, performance, or creative gift of any kind, and join your peers and neighbors in a candle-lighting ceremony that honors the dark, welcomes the return of the light, and collectively supports the unfoldment of our personal intentions and prayers.

A Taste of Honey:

an hour long Contact Improv class with Shakti Andrea Smith,

followed by the JAM

Stone Ridge, NY, April 1

5-7PM

(Honey segways to Jam)

We'll warm up the body, while embodying an internal space of organs, energy, and light. From this attuned, and tuned up, place and space we'll meet others in the dance of Contact...while learning some skills and styles of the form to assist us in meeting our first dance partners of the evening. Our taste of honey class will flow seamlessly into the Jam.

Honey=Sweetness. Also: Superfood.

"Superfoods are a special category of foods found in nature. By definition they are calorie sparse and nutrient dense meaning they pack a lot of punch for their weight as far as goodness goes. They are superior sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients - nutrients we need but cannot make ourselves" Food Matters, Permacology Productions.

Contact=Sweetness+Superfood (calorie sparse..nutrient dense...goodness...nutrients we need but cannot make ourselves)

A note from Shakti:

This class is intended for the novice to Contact Improv, as I've been told there is a great need! My friend Daniel tells me he has been to many classes, but just needs help getting off the floor--how to change levels with a partner? Another friend reminds me how precarious it feels to be upside down. We'll explore that too. You can feel confident that this is the class you can come to try on a well rounded intro to the form, including skills and states, to aid you in gaining a basic embodied understanding, that you can then take to jams, other classes, and into your own practice with friends.

The class:

Wake up your Improviser! Come check out this enlivening, playful, and creative dance form. In a safe and grounded space we'll visit some fundamental Contact skills and awareness exercises. Class will include a luscious warm up, rolling and partnering skills, sharing weight, finding greater ease in being upside down, and some visits to lifts and ledges. These explorations will be supported by experiential anatomy, developing our structural understanding of the body.

Authentic Movement in April
Saturday, April 17, 2010
10:00-12:30
at Moving Body Resources in Chelsea, NYC

Pre-Registration Required: Please call to let me know that you are coming (917-405-5877)

Come join us at this gorgeous studio for a Saturday morning of dropping into your body, and opening up into Spring. We'll start with a guided warm-up, then drop deeply into this profound movement form. Moving, you will sense into your self, for your impulses to move, stretch, dance, be. Witnessing, you will watch while another does the same. This practice cultivates non judgmental witnessing of yourself and the other movers. We will draw and/or write to integrate the movement experience.
Authentic Movement is best known in the dance and therapy worlds--it is practiced by people who love to move/dance, by artists sourcing for material, and for personal growth and deeper understanding of the human psyche. This practice frees up your innate movement. It also cultivates the ability to listen and the qualities of compassion and acceptance.
It is an embodied moving meditation practice. There is no music. All are welcome.
Moving Body Resources is at 112 W 27th Street, Chelsea. See Movingbodyresources.org for more info. We'll be in the large studio, gorgeous floor, many windows, lots of plants.

Experiences in Authentic Movement:
"For 14 months I was not able to dance, due to a foot injury. During this time I could still do authentic movement--I danced while sitting, and standing in place. It was such a relief, to be able to express my self through movement--it was a joy, and healing."--Shakti
"I had a long standing shoulder injury, and when I started Authentic Movement it was clearly the path for my healing. Now my injury is no longer in the forefront of my experience." Martha, Dancer/Movement Educator
